In a rematch that was highlighted with a post game concert and a Rivalry Series trophy, the East St. John wildcats got their revenge Friday night. The Tiger defense was tested all night by the multiple weapons in the wildcat arsenal. East St. John recieved the opening kickoff and matched 80 yards down the field. The Tiger defense bent but didnt break, forcing a wildcat fumble at the Tiger 1-yard line. On East St. John's next possesion the wildcats again matched down the field into the red zone. And like the first possesion the Tiger defense rose to the occasion and forced another wildcat fumble on the Tiger 8-yard line. The first quarter would continue to be a back and forth battle with the score tied at zero.
In the second quarter, East St. John got on the board first with a Johnny Owen 4-yard touchdown run. Owen is a recent transfer from Brother Martin that is making a huge contribution to the wildcat running attack. Owen would score again in the second with a 8-yard touchdown rush. The PAT was good and the wildcats had a 14-0 lead with 4:17 left before halftime. The end of the half was highlighted with the play of sophmore Laron Byrd. Byrd caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from James with 2:44 left in the half. Byrd then ended a late wildcat drive with an interception on the Tiger 11-yard line, which kept the score at 14-7
Owen would extend the wildcat lead to 14 points with a 90-yard touchdown run with 4:34 left in the third quarter. The Tiger defense would force another wildcat turnover when Tremain Cannon recovered a fumble on the wildcat 24-yard line. The Tigers would take advantage with a 11-yard touchdown run from reciever Brian Singleton. The PAT was good and the lead was cut to 21-14. The wildcat offense would answer quickly with a Dickson quarterback keeper for a 70-yard touchdown, which extended the lead to 28-14.
The Tiger would score one more time with a 26-yard touchdown pass from James to Singleton. The PAT was missed and the Tigers trailed 28-20. The wildcats added another late touchdown to seal the victory 35-20. The Tigers was beat by missed tackles and dropped passes. The young Tiger team will have to make a decision whether to come back strong or continue to fall. Some of the players are not accustomed to losing and coming back for losses. Coach Valdin will hopefully have his team back and refocused to take on a tough Buccaneer team at West Jeff.
